All of her trips to the ER and her daily anguish, pain, and lethargy only ever resulted in one question: How could any one person be this sick? Several drug addictions, three major hospitalizations, and over $100,000 later, she finally had a diagnosis: late-stage Lyme disease. For most of that time, she didn't know why. In the tradition of Brain on Fire and Darkness Visible, an honest, beautifully rendered memoir of chronic illness, misdiagnosis, addiction, and the myth of full recovery that details author Porochista Khakpour's struggles with late-stage Lyme disease.įor as long as writer Porochista Khakpour can remember, she has been sick. Jim, the caller, is a nice ordinary fellow who is at once pounced upon by Amanda as a possible husband for Laura. The crux of the action comes when Tom invites a young man of his acquaintance to take dinner with the family. She is crippled, and this defect, intensified by her mother's anxiety to see her married, has driven her more and more into herself. Amanda Wingfield is a faded, tragic remnant of Southern gentility who lives in poverty in a dingy St. It’s not unlike her to interview someone and then slip into their bathroom and steal their pain medication, doping up on expired Vicodin and Valium. DeWitt delves into the seedier aspects of these marvelous cities while simultaneously trying to numb herself to the associated emotional trauma of old relationships. Gran’s series possesses a Philip Marlowe quality with both location and character-her first book took place in New Orleans, while the second is set in San Francisco. In this particular case, DeWitt’s ex-boyfriend, still very dear to her, has been killed, and she intuitively knows it’s not the botched breaking and entering suspected by the police. The Kali Yuga is actually a fairly complex philosophical idea (don’t worry, she explains everything quite clearly). In “Claire DeWitt and the Bohemian Highway,” she’s solving the Case of the Kali Yuga. DeWitt is first introduced in Gran’s 2011 “Claire DeWitt and the City of the Dead” in which she solves the Case of the Green Parrot. In Silette’s world, clues come in unexpected places-dreams, tattoos, fingerprints-not those found on a glass or a gun, but the actual whorls and arches of the finger’s print. As teenagers, Claire and two friends found a life-changing book by French detective Jacques Silette, “Détection,” and started practicing his peculiar methods. Miserable, drug-abusing, pill-popping, possibly insane-she’s nevertheless one of the greatest private eyes in the world. Sara Gran has created an amazing character in Claire DeWitt, the detective in her brilliant series. Deposed and charged with religious crimes, Wienis takes his own life. He sends a fleet of ships, but, as the moment of victory nears, Wienis finds that his engineer-priests have gone on strike, and all mechanical activity stops on Anacreon and its spaceships. The leader of the planet Anacreon, Prince Regent Wienis, disbelieves the religion and plots to conquer the Foundation, which has no military defenses. Citizens adopt the religion and depend on the Foundation for its bounty. The engineers who maintain those worlds’ infrastructures are priests trained in a new religion, promoted by the Foundation, which teaches that advanced technology is a holy miracle provided by a Galactic Spirit. During the decades that follow, the Foundation, under the watchful eye of Mayor Hardin, provides nuclear power and other technologies to the increasingly technologically inferior planets nearby. While it was cool to see Matt and Kingpin vying for control of City Hall, everything else fell flat. But then came the painfully mediocre Mayor Fisk storyline. The Supreme arc was fantastic and Muse was an amazing addition to DD’s rogues’ gallery. However, I began to warm up to the new direction once Soule went back and bridged the gap between his run and Waid’s. The way it undid over a decade’s worth of story progression and character development really irked me. I just finished it and I honestly don’t know how to feel.
